Austria: Green Party supporters celebrate historic result at snap elections

The Greens celebrated their best ever election result in a legislative election at their headquarters in Vienna, on Sunday. The party won 12.4 per cent of vote placing them fourth and with an opportunity to enter a coalition government.

Their supporters were filmed applauding, cheering and dancing as they watched the announcement of the preliminary results on a giant screen.

"We have done a lot of things the right way apparently, and there was a wide movement, especially from the youth, which we felt wanted exactly what just happened. It didn't come from nothing, or that it just happened by chance. But I think it was a historical necessity," Sibylle Hamann, said candidate for the Green Party.

"Our positions are clear, we are standing for a radical change in the Austrian climate politics. We want social fairness and radical transparency and control. Whoever want to do this with us and wants to achieve it with us -- is more than welcome. If it will be Sebastian Kurz -- it's up to him," she added.

According to the results, Kurz's OVP won 38.4 per cent of the vote. The Social Democratic Party of Austria came in second, with 21.5 per cent, while the far-right Freedom Party of Austria picked up 17.3 per cent.

Kurz's government collapsed in May, triggering snap elections when a recording was published of then-Vice Chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache in a conversation with an unidentified woman claiming to be the niece of a Russian oligarch, discussing taking control of the country's largest-circulation tabloid in order to help the FPO in future elections. The purported deal was allegedly made in exchange for public contracts.
